Little Movies

Lev Manovich
Little Movies
1994

Just as its title suggests, Little Movies asks what kinds of cinematic experiences can exist on the early, bandwidth-cramped web. Lev Manovich, later the author of seminal critical text The Language of New Media (2000), designs a number of “little movies” that take the Internet’s limitations as an expressive opportunity. Taken together, the individual movies function as a kind of lyrical ars poetica for the possibilities of digital cinema—one with as much in common with the Lumière brothers as Silicon Valley.
